OMSWD Votes Down Attempt to Issue Letter of Closure for Nabors Landfill

A proposal brought to the Ozark Mountain Solid Waste District Board to secure a letter of closure for the Nabors Landfill near Mountain Home is defeated.

The proposal would have been to issue a letter to the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality on behalf of the board.

Mountain Grove Mayor Hillrey Adams tells KTLO that it was discovered that when closing a landfill, it is required to submit such a letter to ADEQ which they in turn would issue a closure permit.

Adams said during his interview on KTLO that he along with Bull Shoals Mayor Michael Savu and Baxter County Judge Kevin Litty supported the proposal. When asked about those that voted against it, Adams said that they voiced concerns about the repayment of closure funds as well as the potential sale of the property as reasons not to support the letter. Those voting against the letter included Board Chairman Fred Woehl, Harrison Mayor Jerry Jackson, and Marion County Judge Jason Stumph. In a later interview with KTLO, Stumph said he is definitely not in favor of the landfill reopening but wanted to make sure that they would not be in breach of contract with the potential buyer of the land by signing the letter which is why he opposed the letter at this time.

Adams said that another possible avenue to get the landfill closed is for the letter to be submitted by both the Baxter County Quorum Court and the Mountain Home City Council and he said they will look at that option to ensure that the landfill never reopens.

More details on the meeting can be found on the KTLO Website.
