According to the just released probable cause affidavit, Boone County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the old Burlington General Store in reference to a breaking and entering incident.

Upon arrival, contact was made with the owner who stated she had issues with people breaking into the property in the past and on Jan. 17, 2021 two individuals, identified as Archie Edwards of Pyatt and Erik Olson of Saint Joe, were inside the building.

The owner stated she and another individual blocked the entrances to the building with vehicles in attempt to hold the trespassers inside. She then stated two white male individuals exited the property and made an attempt to get into their vehicle and then allegedly drove towards her in an attempt to strike her before driving away.

Sometime later that day, a second individual made contact with the owner and stated the two suspects were located near the intersection of Old Cricket Road and Highway 14. Deputies then headed to the intersection where they found a truck matching the description of the suspects, as well as the owner’s husband pursuing it.

Once Edwards and Olson were advised of their Miranda Rights, they stated they went to the store to check it out, “as it would make a good catfish cafe.” The suspects stated they were in the building for no longer than two minutes when a man approached and allegedly started threatening them with a gun.

A search of the suspect’s vehicle was then conducted and produced no stolen items, but instead several open mason jars of homemade moonshine, and a small bag of suspected marijuana.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions in place at the time, both Olson and Edwards were charged with felony counts of breaking or entering and misdemeanor counts of open containers and posession of a controlled substance, but were released from custody shortly after.
