Turf Installation Makes Progress

Astroturf infields are being installed at the Equity Bank Sports Complex

On Monday afternoon the installation of artificial turf on the baseball and softball fields at the Equity Bank Sports Complex was showing major progress.

Mid-America Sports Construction out of Lee Summit Missouri is the company installing the new infield playing surface. The company has been in business since 1993 according to their website

Brad Yoder with Mid-America Sports Construction said the material being used in Harrison is an Astroturf brand that is specifically for baseball fields and has been used on many high school and collegiate ballfields around the country.

He described the process of installing artificial turf saying, “basically you’re taking out the dirt, putting in a free draining stone, putting in a perimeter drainage, and then your synthetic turf goes on top of that, and your infield goes into the turf.”

He also said that they are on track to finish the project by the contract date of February 15th, barring any major weather event. Currently there are two fields, Jack Williams Field and Pippin Field, that have turf already down, crews are currently working on a third field. The surface is scheduled to be ready in time Goblin baseball and softball games which will start in late February.

Containers of Astroturf line the edges of the complex parking lot on Monday waiting to be installed.
