Sanctuary Inc. Shelters and Empowers Clients Escaping Domestic Violence

Sanctuary Inc. is a local domestic violence shelter that offers shelter for individuals, mainly women, escaping domestic violence, according to Shannon Farebee.

Farebee and Emily Miliken appeared on KHOZ's "Around The Table" to talk about it. Farabee said the grant-funded organization gives women a place to stay in the shelter for a short time. The goal is to "quickly get into their own place without violence."

From there, they work with these individuals to ensure that they don't enter domestic abuse situations again. Farebee added that Sanctuary also engages in outreach. She said the people who are served in outreach are in need of support more so than shelter.

The shelter, in addition to having a support group, helps with protection orders and court advocacy. Later, Farebee spoke about the program timeline.

There's no time limit on the services, but Farebee said that the shelter itself is meant to be temporary. However, she said that they want to "empower" the people they serve.

They won't tell clients what to do, but they expect their clients to actively work while the shelter assists them. Farebee said that they "can't just come in and sleep and just hangout." More information about the Sanctuary is available on the website.

Their hotline is 870-741-2121; that phone line is always open. More was discussed on the broadcast.

The full interview with Miliken and Farebee is available on the "Around The Table" Facebook Page.
