Harrison firefighters responded to a call Saturday afternoon at a scrapyard in the City’s Industrial Park.

According to KYTV/KSPR, Harrison Fire Chief Marc Lowery says several individuals were treated for heat exhaustion due to the fire, and a firefighter was sent to a hospital for precautionary reasons.

The fire reportedly emerged at Myers Metal Recycling on Industrial Park Road around 12:30, nearly a half hour after the site closed and employees left. The business has several old cars for the purpose of recycling them for scrap pieces. Investigators say the fire is believed to have started in one of the vehicles, leading to others catching fire.

Harrison fire crews arrived to the scene just before 1 p.m., extinguished the fire and cleared the scene after nearly 4 1/2 hours. The Valley Springs Fire Department posted on Facebook they provided mutual aid, as did the Capps/Batavia Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but no criminal activity is suspected.
