Newton County Library, BNR Hosting Oral History Training

The Newton County Library, in partnership with Buffalo National River (BNR), is hosting a training on collecting oral histories Friday afternoon at 3.

The training will include how to use the StoryCorps app and StoryCorps communities, sample interview questions and a live example of story collection.

The initiative is designed to learn how to become story collectors, preserve local history and contribute to a more complete story of Newton County.

In January, BNR kicked off an oral history project. The project is an effort to help commemorate the 50th anniversary of Buffalo National River in 2022

BNR says it is encouraging people to share their stories of the river and local communities by creating an oral history. An oral history is a way to learn about the past by interviewing friends or relatives and documenting their memories. By using these oral histories, we can gain a better understanding of what the past looked like.

A number of interviews have been collected for the project, including one with Cathie and Wayne Branch of Yellville. View the interview at archive.storycorps.org/interviews/something-about-this-river/.
