NARMC Behavioral Health

Director of Behavioral Health at NARMC Dawn Shoemake shared updates on Friday.

Shoemake appeared on KHOZ's "Around The Table" to discuss a variety of topics. She said despite behavior health dealing primarily with the mind, it's all encompassing because the mind impacts everything. Shoemake praised the staff and capabilities of NARMC's behavioral health department.

The fact that it's in house at NARMC allows for faster care. "We have the access to the laboratory, we have the access to the MRIS, to the CATSCANS where a lot of freestanding facilities, they don't have that," Shoemake said. Later, she gave advice to people seeing signs of dementia in family members.

First, she said the department is open 24/7 and takes admissions 24/7. She encouraged anyone who notices signs or has concerns to contact their primary care doctor. She said the doctor can write a referral. She said if it's approaching dangerous territory or a situation requires immediate help, go to the closest emergency room or call 911. Also, the behavioral health director said the departments nurses can answer questions at 870-414-4101.

Shoemake talked about all this and more. The whole interview with Shoemake is on the "Around The Table" Facebook Page.
