Marion County Man Pleads Guilty to EBT Theft

A Marion County man who used a former housemate’s Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card draining almost $900 from the victim’s account pled guilty to charges against him during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court Monday.

32-year-old Jacob Deery was sentenced to four years probation and ordered to pay victim restitution of almost $860 after entering his guilty plea to charges of theft of public benefits, theft of property and fraudulent use of a credit/debit card.

According to the recently released probable cause affidavit, the victim reported to the Gassville police in March 2022 that someone had taken his EBT card and used all but fifteen cents of the funds available.

The card was recorded as being used eight times on February 7 and 8 of last year, according to investigators.

The victim identified the person who had gained control of the card and then used it to steal almost $900 as Deery, who was a roommate with the victim and got the card after the victim had moved away prior to it being delivered to the residence.
