A man is in the Marion County Law Enforcement Center following a Sunday afternoon standoff in which deputies were struck by shrapnel after a vehicle was shot.
Charges are pending for 51-year-old Joshua Smithee of Everton. Deputies were able to avoid injury from the shrapnel.
According to Marion County Sheriff Gregg Alexander, deputies were dispatched to a residence northwest of Bruno on Marion County Road 4039 on a report of a male threatening a family member with a firearm. After meeting with Smithee’s father, they attempted to convince the suspect to exit the residence and talk about the incident. Smithee allegedly refused and threatened to shoot the deputies while in possession of a handgun and a shotgun.
Deputies took cover and continued their negotiation attempts with no response. Smithee reportedly exited the residence, re-entered and fired a shot from inside. The standoff lasted nearly two hours with Smithee allegedly firing three shots, striking a vehicle parked near the residence. Shrapnel from the vehicle reportedly struck deputies in their faces and bodies. One deputy returned fire, but no injuries were reported.
Smithee eventually exited the residence and was taken into custody. Additional information as investigators proces the crime scene, collect evidence and conduct additional interviews.
