HSN 4th Grader Recognized for National Anthem Salute

“This is what type of students we have at Harrison." - Dr. Stewart Pratt

McKenzie Ryan is a fourth grader at Skyline Elementary School in Harrison. She was recognized by Superintendent, Dr. Stewart Pratt, at the February meeting of the Harrison School Board for observing the National Anthem at a recent basketball game.

What made her observance special was, as Dr. Pratt explained, at the start of the boys’ basketball game when the National Anthem was played there were a group of young children running around on the walking track of the arena below where the American Flag is displayed.

“When it came time for the pledge this young lady got everybody to stop, she made them all stop, “Dr. Pratt said.

He said Ryan then pulled a young boy who was probably about 4 or 5 years old up next to her side and showed him how to put his hand over his heart. She then sang along to the National Anthem while it was played by the band.

“This is what type of students we have at Harrison,” Dr. Pratt said, “She’s a great example. I wanted to recognize her tonight at the board meeting for what she did as leadership. Amen?”

Ryan then received a round of applause and a standing ovation from the board and everyone in attendance.
