Four hikers were able to escape injury after having to be rescued during Wednesday’s flash flooding in Newton County. One of the hikers was also carrying a five-month-old infant.

According to Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler, his office received a 911 call Wednesday afternoon about the hikers stranded in the Lost Valley area. They were reportedly on their way back to the trailhead when a torrential rainstorm hit. One member of the party was ahead of the remaining hikers and safely crossed Clark Creek before the rest of the group. Clark Creek then flooded and trapped the others on the other side.

Deputies arrived, deployed throw bags and set up a rope line. One of the deputies, also a swift water rescue technician, was able to cross the flooded creek and assist the others safely across, while other deputies manned the ropes and set up safety zones downstream.

Another volunteer swift water rescue expert and a National Park Service ranger also responded to the scene.
