A former mayor of a Lakes Area community is facing charges after getting reimbursements for health insurance with out formal approval.

According to a report from KTLO, formal Bull Shoals Mayor David Nixon is charged with felony theft of property and abuse of office for having the city issue him checks for his Medicare Part B payments.

During an investigation by the Arkansas Attorney General's Office, Nixon claimed he had used "administrative discretion" in authorizing the payments to himself instead of taking health insurance through the city although no such action was authorized by the Bull Shoals City Council. The situation came to the state's attention after the person who succeeded Nixon in office, Mike Savu, questioned a check his was signing to Nixon for a payment shortly after taking office in 2023. Savu contacted the Attorney General's Office which initiated the investigation.

Nixon, who served as Bull Shoals Mayor from 2017-22, was arrested and booked into the Marion County Detention Center on Tuesday and was later released after posting a $1,500 Bond.
