Boone County Woman Arrested Attempting to Steal AC Unit

A Boone County woman has been arrested after attempting to steal a window air conditioning unit.

Details on the story from KTLO:

According to the probable cause affidavit in the case, on the night of July 19, at approximately 11:20, authorities dispatched to a residence along Fowler Drive in Harrison in reference to a female in the process of stealing an AC unit.

Upon arrival authorities observed a female standing in the yard holding a flashlight and a pair of black bolt cutters. Allegedly laying on the ground between her and the residence was an off-white AC unit. The female, identified as 58-year-old Billie Hacker, was instructed to place the bolt cutters on the ground and asked to provide her name. Hacker originally identified herself as a Cindy Smith, with a birth year of 1972.

Authorities note the initial caller was also on scene. The caller stated he observed Hacker inside the residence, asked her to step outside and then called the Harrison Police Department. Officials went with the caller inside the residence to assess further damage, where they noted the wire used to support the AC unit was cut and a plunger and a boxed set of mini blinds had been removed from the residence and placed on the ground outside.

Hacker was run through the ACIC with the name and date of birth she originally provided, but after running the vehicle she was using through the ACIC, it returned as registered to Hacker with the drivers license photo matching.

Hacker was taken into custody and after being read her Miranda Rights, she stated she received a call from a friend stating her father was having symptoms of a heat stroke. Hacker stated she looked at her place of business for a unit, but was unable to find one. When asked why she chose to take the unit from this residence, Hacker stated she makes bad decisions after taking her prescribed sleeping medication.

Hacker was charged with a felony count of breaking or entering, and misdemeanor counts of theft and obstructing government operations.

She has been released on a $5,000 bond.
