Boone Co. Man Arrested for Allegedly Cashing Forged Checks

A man from Harrison has been arrested following an investigation into an elderly woman’s missing checks.

According to the probable cause statement from the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, a report was made Feb. 7 by an elderly woman in Harrison stating several checks were written on her account she did not authorize. The total amount on the checks came out to be $6,400 and were written between Jan. 24 and Feb. 8.

The checks were written to a bank renamed in 2017, indicating the checks were old and potentially discarded. The checks were deposited under the name of James Turner whom the victim stated she did not know. A patrolman knew of a local James Turner born Feb. 1 1984, which led to him being the suspect due to one of the checks dated Feb. 1, 2023 with the memo stating “birthday.”

On March 20, the Boone County Prosecuting Office was made aware of the criminal investigation leading to a subpoena of the receiving online only bank. The data reviewed led to the discovery of someone using the name James Turner being the owner of the online bank account.

An investigation into the email account used for the bank, Turner’s Facebook page and other public record sites led to the discovery Turner was the one allegedly using old checks to forge the elderly victims name and steal money.

Authorities used multiple evidentiary items to identify Turner, including the pillow case used in a selfie matching the design in the background of one of the check pictures.

Turner is facing felony counts of theft of property, forgery and exploiting an impaired person.

He has been booked into the Boone County Detention Center with a $15,000 bond.
