ASP reports no traffic fatalities in Arkansas on New Year’s Day

The first traffic fatality worked by the Arkansas State Police in 2023 occurred at 2:30 AM on January 2nd.

The crash took place in Chicot County when a Dodge Caravan driven by Eliceo Luna Perez crossed the center line on Highway 82 and struck a Chevy Silverado pickup truck. Both drivers survived the crash but the passenger of the Dodge Caravan, Carlos Gomez Tino, was killed.

ASP reports that road conditions were clear but wet at the time of accident.

This is the 5th time since 2005 that ASP have not reported a traffic fatality on New Year's Day. No New Year's Day deaths were reported in 2022 either. The longest ASP have gone into a year without reporting a fatality was January 4th at 2:22 AM in 2018. The earliest a fatal crash was reported was in 2007 on January 1st at 12:20 AM.

The total traffic fatalities in 2022 came to 606, down from 2021 which reported 650.
