The Boone County Jail Sunset Clause or tax expires at the end of 2026, according to Boone County's quorum court member Glenn Redding.
Redding said that during his appearance with Boone County Sheriff Roy Martin on KHOZ's "Around The Table" on Tuesday. Once votes are cast in 2026, the renewal will take effect in 2027. A vote must happen in order to avoid dipping into the general fund to pay for the jail.
The sheriff said the community should support the jail. "They always have," Martin said. Redding explained the reasoning for the sunset clause.
He said that it was made a sunset clause to ensure the support of the citizens, adding that people are hesitant when they hear taxes brought up. The tax is only a quarter of a penny.
