Boone County Community Band will Give Musicians of all Ages Time to Play

Boone County Community Band gives musicians of all ages the chance to put their passion to work by showcasing their talent, according to retired Harrison Band Director Robert Phelan.

Phelan appeared on KHOZ's "Around The Table" on Friday to discuss the band. This new band will probably rehearse on Monday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Rehearsals will occur in the high school's band hall; the first rehearsal is on Sept. 11.

Any adult that plays as well as high school student that plays "wind, air or percussion" instruments are invited to join the band. Junior high students are invited provided that they have made "all region" and have a recommendation from their directors. No string instruments are involved.

This idea for the band, Phelan said, was tossed "around for years." The trouble with organizing it was that no director could be found. "Everybody that has any kind of instrumental background wants to play," Phelan said.

He was approached about starting a community band; he said he agreed to direct it "in a weak moment." He added that starting this musical group is a team effort between current and retired local band directors.

"I'm very pleased that it's going to happen, and I would much rather be playing," he said excitedly. Phelan will have opportunities to play because other directors will step in to direct "one or two tunes" in concerts.

Phelan said the hope is to have the first concert on Nov. 30 at the Lyric Theatre; anyone wanting more information about the band can reach out to Phelan on Facebook. More was discussed on the broadcast.

The full interview with Phelan is available on the "Around The Table" Facebook Page.
