Application Period Open for USDA Arkansas Elementary School Program

Schools can apply for program to help supply students with healthy food through the state's Department of Agriculture.

The Arkansas Department of Agriculture is accepting applications from elementary schools for the 2026–2027 USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP). The program reimburses schools for fresh fruits and vegetables served free to students in grades K–6 during the school day, outside of breakfast and lunch meal periods. Completed applications must be submitted no later than Friday, August 28, 2026.

“For too long, students lacked the fuel they needed to learn, but thanks to the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, schools are now able to make sure that Arkansas’ students have access to the healthy, nutritious foods they deserve right in their school cafeterias,” said Governor Sanders. “Coupled with my Arkansas Plate Initiative - a program giving students access to fresh, locally sourced agricultural products at school - my administration is making meaningful progress toward improving child nutrition in Arkansas.”

“Under Governor Sanders’ leadership we are committed to expanding access to healthy food, reducing food insecurity, and creating additional market opportunities for Arkansas farmers,” said Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward. “This program will improve student health, support Arkansas agriculture, and strengthen communities throughout our state.”

“The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program gives Arkansas students greater access to healthy foods during the school day while helping them develop lifelong healthy eating habits,” said Stephanie Alsbrook, Arkansas Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Director. “Arkansas-specific research shows that schools offering FFVP for two or more consecutive years see up to a four percent decline in childhood obesity rates. This program is a meaningful investment in the health of our students and the future of our communities.”

Beginning October 1, 2026, the Department will administer $3,376,009 in FFVP funding, with at least 162 Arkansas schools expected to participate. Schools are funded based on their free and reduced-price meal eligibility, and funding is contingent on USDA federal allocations.

Elementary schools serving grades K–6 that operate the National School Lunch Program are eligible to apply. Complete eligibility requirements, application instructions, and program guidelines are available on the Department’s website. Interested schools are encouraged to review the materials and apply before the August 28 deadline.
